Vote Yes to Ask the FDA to List Vitamin K on Food Labels

StopAfib.org - For Patients. By Patients - Stop Atrial Fibrillation

At the American College of Cardiology meeting last week, I discovered a neat project being tackled by Alere, the sponsor of PTINR.com, which is a web site we highly recommend for those taking Coumadin or warfarin.

If you take warfarin or Coumadin, you know that you have to keep your vitamin K intake consistent, but food labels don’t provide the information you need. Alere is working with the FDA to get vitamin K included on US food labels, and they could use your help with this important project.

If you would find it useful to have food and beverage labels list the amount of vitamin K contained, please vote Yes here to ask the FDA to add this to food labels.

After doing so, please feel free to add additional comments here on this blog post, and we’ll pass them along to be shared with the FDA. Thanks.

As a parent of a 4 year old on warfarin (valve replacement due to congenital heart disease), I applaud you for helping work toward better Vitamin K information on food labels. It’s hard enough to get kids to eat vegetables – when we don’t know whether foods may impact his INR, it’s doubly tough.

After having a heart attack 8 years ago, my wife had numerous episodes of A-fib and has been taking Cardizem which controls it quite effectively. She has also, for some years, been taking a Vitamin K complex (K1 and K2) for osteoporosis. She takes no other blood thinners.
My question is, since her now-infrequent episodes of A-fim put her at risk for clotting and possible stroke, would it be best to stop the Vitamin K since it promotes clotting, especially in view of the fact that she is vegetarian and eats large quantities of green, leafy veggies?

“YES!” Definitely, vitamin K must be included on US food labels. Other companies might just be tricking us., which is not good at all.
