I-STOP-AFib Study: Identify Your Atrial Fibrillation Triggers

You are invited to contribute to a study that will help us better understand afib triggers. The I-STOP-AFib Study is a patient-powered study led by Dr. Gregory Marcus (UCSF, Health eHeart Study Primary Investigator) and Kathi Sigona (Lead Patient Investigator). It was co-developed with atrial fibrillation patients, including Mellanie True Hills (our founder), Debbe McCall (our super-volunteer and moderator of the Facebook Atrial Fibrillation Support Group), Kathleen Sciarappa (a member of our afib community), and others.

Last year, hundreds of you contributed to this project by taking a survey where you shared your afib triggers. A link to the published results can be found in that story. The I-STOP-AFib Study is based on the triggers you provided.

The purpose of the I-STOP-AFib Study is to improve your quality of life, and that of other afib patients, by testing potential afib triggers and comparing that to careful tracking of afib episodes using a smartphone. Your participation in this study could help us learn how to better predict and prevent afib episodes.

Do you own a smartphone? Do you have symptomatic atrial fibrillation (afib that comes and goes)? Do you have triggers that you suspect cause your afib? Are you in the United States? If so, please consider participating in this study.

The study should take three months and involve you in doing the following:

  • Daily tracking of the frequency and severity of your afib episodes
  • Daily ECG tracings with a study-provided (or your own) AliveCor Kardia device
  • Testing afib triggers that you wish to test (e.g. caffeine, exercise, alcohol)

I-STOP-AFib is a virtual study. Study activities will be completed on your smartphone using a mobile app.
